Hair Trend: Fishtail Braid

I’m currently loving the side fishtail braid hairstyle.

For anyone stuck for style inspiration, the fishtail braid is a great way to achieve a romantic and stylish look effortlessly.

It also is a nice change from the typical braids. It’s easy to wear and can transition from a casual day look to an elegant evening look.

Not only does it look great on the red carpet, but it would also work well for a day at the beach.

Jessica Szohr: Fishtail Braid

I find that the side fishtail works best on long layered hair. The top of the hair should be straight and smooth, with some unbraided hair left out at the ends. This makes for a cool, tousled, undone-looking style.

GET THE LOOK …

STEP 1: Divide the hair you want to braid into two equal sections.

STEP 2: Start the fishtail braid by holding the right section with your right hand. Then, using your left hand, pick up a small chunk of hair from the outside of the left section and cross it over to the inside of the right section.

STEP 3: Repeat on the other side: Hold the left section in your left hand. Use your right hand to pick up a small chunk of hair from the outer right section and cross it over to the inside of the left section.

STEP 4: Continue picking up small sections and crossing them over until you reach the ends of your hair.

STEP 5: Secure with an elastic (like Sephora’s Snag-Free Hair Elastics, $3.50), and spray the braid with a little shine spray like Smooth N’ Shine Scalp & Breakage Miracle’s Root to Tip Oil Sheen Spray ($3.99, drugstore.com) to seal in moisture and boost shine. And you’re all set!
